The Bank Shot Calculator (BSC) is a training tool for pool players in the form of a smart phone application.     It allows the user to replicate any situation they may be faced with in a real game.  This is accomplished by     plotting the object ball and cue ball at the location on the app table which represents the balls position on       the pool table.  Then by simply touching the number of the rail the user wishes to hit and the target pocket     the app will calculate the angle to and from the rail and display the shot.  A numerical solution is also            provided at the top of the app screen.

Definitions:

  1. Bank Shot – Causing the object to strike the rail of a pool table and rebound to a selected pocket or location on the pool table.
  2. Kick Shot – Causing the cue ball to strike the rail of a pool table and rebound to a desired position on the pool table, possibly striking and driving an object ball to a desired pocket or location on the pool table.
  3. English – In pool the term English is used to describe the amount and direction of spin imparted on the cue ball by striking the cue ball with the tip of the pool cue (stick) at a point to the left, right, above or below the cue ball center point.
  4. Running English – Striking the cue ball either top/left or top/right of center, determined by the natural angle of travel around the table.  If the ball strikes the rail and rebounds to the right of the impact point then top right is considered running English.
  5. Center Ball – Striking the cue ball in the absolute center in relationship to the angle of the players stick. A stroke which imparts no English on the cue ball.

Both of the examples below will impart no spin on the cue ball.

 

           Distance between the two rails.

With the diagram below the white and red lines represents the path of the cue ball with no English; the black represents the center point of the angle.  If you move the three lines together to the right, the closer you get to the side rail the more English will be imparted off the second rail.  Also, the more you move the cue ball left of the white line the more English will be imparted off the first rail.

The closer the three lines get to the left rail the less English will be imparted off the second rail.

Shots to the right of the white line require no running English.  That’s because the angle is such that no English is imparted on the ball at impact with the rail.

            Rule of thumb:  Distance = Time, time diminishes spin. 

This means the greater the distance between the first and second rail the greater the time lag, hence a lesser influence of English because friction from the surface felt lessens or removes the spin imparted by the rail.  The further you move the three lines to the left, the greater the distance between the two rails.  The further to the right the less the distance.
